Shanghai Street Kuchai Lama
About This Spot
Stepping into Shanghai Street Kuchai Lama feels like discovering a quiet pocket of Shanghai's charm tucked away amidst the bustle of Kuala Lumpur's industrial heart. The space unfolds with a subtle warmth — a blend of thoughtful touches like birdcage-inspired lighting that casts a gentle glow, soothing the mood as conversations settle into a calm rhythm. It’s a spot where the pace slows just enough to welcome connection, whether you’re dining solo or sharing stories over a meal with friends.
The atmosphere here strikes a balance between approachable and deliberate, inviting diners not just to eat but to savor each moment. The decor hints at Shanghai’s rich culinary legacy without overwhelming, creating a backdrop that feels both familiar and a little adventurous. It’s the kind of place where the staff’s genuine warmth adds an unspoken layer of hospitality, making guests feel seen and comfortable.
Food at Shanghai Street is an experience woven from rich textures and bold, yet balanced flavors. The aroma that drifts from the kitchen teases the palate with familiar scents — imagining dumplings steaming gently, noodles tossed in savory black bean sauce, or the distinct zing of a spicy chicken dish. Portions are generous, encouraging sharing and the communal pleasure of tasting a variety of specialties that pay homage to Shanghai’s culinary roots while embracing subtle local influences.
What stands out is how the menu doesn’t just offer meals, but moments: the soft pop of soup-filled xiao long bao bursting with juice, the comforting familiarity of tomato scrambled eggs paired with rice, or the satisfying texture of hand-made wontons alongside aromatic broths. The experience here isn’t rushed — it’s about unfolding flavors patiently, letting the food and company do the talking.
Though it’s nestled in a practical locale, the restaurant manages to create a small sanctuary, a place where the everyday and the special meet. It’s easy to imagine dropping by for a midday meal, waiting out a busy day nearby, and leaving with a sense of contentment — fuller not just in belly but in spirit.

Surprising very tasty food. Especially like the unique Shanghai dim sum menu. Love the tomato egg rice too, very original taste

Found another gem. Food is excellent good. Ordered xiaolongbao, Sze chuan special spicy chicken, glutinous rice shao mai and mix assorted wanton with seaweed soup for 2 pax. Price is not high for the portion served. Best to order to share. The chili oil dip is so fragrant, goes very well with the glutinous shao mai and wantons. If only parking is not a pain. Definitely will be back!!

I've never been to Shanghai, so I can't vouch for the authenticity of the food here. But I do find them very tasty, and come with generous portions. The ambience here is also very charming, with bird cages used as light bulb casing hanging from the ceiling. Prices are not cheap but reasonable, given the food quality and the good service. Will return

Excellent new find in kuchai whilst awaiting car servicing nearby. Enjoy the cleanliness and friendliness of staff hospitality. And, it's clean, cooling and spacious with nice Shanghainess shialong buns and my favourite chicken legs. Carparks not easy to find so gotta be extra patient. Would definitely bring family and friends to enjoy brunch again.

Great flavours, which - even though it’s Shanghainese in branding and theme - it fitted my Malaysian tastebuds & BIG portions! Plus, the dim sum were all packed with meaty & juicy fillings that gave me more reason to come back for it soon~

The food was excellent. Upon entering, we noticed there were only a few diners, which initially made us consider changing venues. However, we decided to proceed as planned and ultimately enjoyed a wonderful dinner.
